I have been thinking about writing this post for a while now but have been putting it off because I felt that I needed to get a few weeks of the couch to 5K programme under my belt first, before I could even think about giving the inside track to anyone who wanted to give the couch to 5K app a try…
Writing about this also means that I have to admit to how unfit I have really let myself get, which is rather embarrassing!
Like many of us, I cancelled my gym membership about 4 months ago having told myself “I don’t need to go to a gym to get fit!” I am not certain that this was the most sensible decision as I just kept making excuses and always seemed to find a reason not to exercise… busy at work; family commitments; exhaustion; you name it I used it!
Recently the challenge of trying to kick off a new business, combined with needing to balance my family commitments (of which there are many!) has left me hoping me for a few spare minutes to myself in a day, and I am sure many of us can relate to this!
The problem is that the lack of exercise (and lack of sleep) has left me feeling desperately lethargic. Worse still, I was disappointed in myself because I stopped taking the time to invest in me. After all if we don’t take care of ourselves, who else will?
I don’t know about anyone else but I don’t ever seem to be able to stick to an exercise program? Its so hard! I always start off with good intentions but I am easily distracted… an impromptu social event is a perfect excuse to push me off course. Just recently, a night out with friends meant I just could not wake up for my run the next day, and instead of getting up to my alarm, I turned over, pressed the snooze button, closed my eyes and pretend not to feel guilty at the fact that I knew I am only cheating myself!
Not this time she says…

Sometimes you just need to find something that motivates you. It could be anything, a fitness documentary that inspires you, or a friend doing amazingly with their endeavours, then all of a sudden you are overcome with enthusiasm and inspiration and find the motivation to ‘Just Do It’ (as Nike would say 🙂 )
Well my motivation took the form of my lovely friend Victoria, and when she approached me and asked me to start the couch to 5K with her… of course I said yes!
Now don’t get me wrong, there have been a few bumps in the road…
For example, after having surgery last week I was forced to take some time off to recover, it’s so frustrating as I was really getting into the swing of it!
Oh well, hopefully by next week I can pick up where I left off.
The important point is that I am not only determined to complete the programme, but to keep up the momentum afterwards!
More to follow …
