What can Pinterest really be used for?

img_3780A few months ago I had no idea how to navigate any of the various social media platforms because I had never used any of them. This was a conscious choice of mine due to the nature of my previous job.

Over the last few months I have been trying to dedicate some time each week to work on the various platforms. I think I have started to get the hang of my Instagram page now; I am not sure though? Perhaps you will be the better judge of that…. all feedback welcome!

That said, for some reason I have been shying away from Pinterest. But what is Pinterest? To start, I didn’t even get the name right, I thought it was called Pintrest… or was it Pinterest UK? Shows how much I knew! Although I had a personal Pinterest account I never really used it and struggled to understand how it could benefit me as a blogger and as an online seller.

In order to take the plunge, I have spent the last few days trying to understand exactly what Pinterest is and what it can be used for.

To be honest, when I originally opened my personal Pinterest account I thought it was just a place to share photographs with like minded people. My sister used it as a ideas board for the amazing cakes she makes but apart from that I did not have a clue. The fact is that every single pictured that is pinned to Pinterest, leads back to the website where it was pinned from, be it an online shop, blog or anything in-between. How many times have you researched ideas for your supper for example, and clicked on the most appetising picture to find the recipe?

According to my research, more than 175 million people go to their Pinterest login or their Pinterest app and use it every month worldwide. These are huge numbers, and the more I read the more I have started to think about Pinterest as a huge search engine, as opposed to a social media channel; this is when I saw how it could be used to drive traffic to my website.

From what I have read, and experienced, ranking highly on Google can take months or even years of persistent Search Engine Optimization, or SEO grafting, to achieve! So unless I am already a ‘social media superstar’ (clearly I am not) the hits I am going to get from the link to my Instagram bio or from me tweeting is likely to be minimal.

I need to start thinking about developing a strategy which gives me the best chance to rank higher up the algorithm each day. This means making sure my pins stand out and that I am using keywords and phrases. Believe me, this is all new to me! Is this all new to you too?

So, I have just signed up to my first Pinterest business account. Business Pinterest sign up was free and easy, and believe it or not, you don’t actually need a business to sign up for a business account. Not only does it look more professional but it also gives you access to other features, including Pinterest analytics

I have decided to focus on the following topics over the next few months:

  • How to optimize and edit my Pinterest profile for maximum exposure
  • How to claim my website and why this is important
  • How to enable rich pins rich pins and why I should be doing this
  • How to create personal boards that rank
  • How to re-pin other people’s content, as well as my own
  • How to make my own amazing pins
  • How to join other Pinterest group boards and why this is important

As of today, my new business Pinterest account has 0 followers! I clearly have a very long way to go, but I thought it might be an interesting experiment to see if I can gain more followers by learning how to use this platform and feed back my results to you in my blogs to see if this strategy actually works? My ultimate goal of course is to drive people to my blog and get them to buy things from my shop page. Fingers crossed!

Maybe you’d like to come on this journey with me to see if what I am doing works, and perhaps learn how to make Pinterest work more efficiently for you?

Let me know what you think in the comments section, would you like to know more?
